It has been shown that plants called teocintles are the oldest ancestors of cultivated corn. Eight species have been identified, two of which are found in Guatemala and four in Mexico.
Teocintles evolved into cultivated corn through a domestication process that lasted about 10,000 years.
Teocintles are distinguished by having branched stems, numerous small ears per plant, and a single row of grains that detach naturally.
Why is it necessary to conserve these wild plants called teocintles?
They exhibit greater genetic diversity than their cultivated counterparts, have greater adaptability to different environmental conditions, and can withstand various adverse abiotic and biotic factors.
